CONDITION REPORT
SECONDARY SUPPORT: The stretcher has 2 members and all 8 keys are present. The condition is sound.
PRIMARY SUPPORT: The canvas has been lined and the original tacking margins removed. The turn-over edge has been covered with brown paper. The tacks appear to be evenly-spaced and some show signs of rust coming through the brown paper.
GROUND: The ground is in a good condition and is cream in colour.
PAINT LAYER: The artist has applied been applied thinly and is in a good condition with one area of localized retouching that appears to be slightly discoloured and a little thicker in application.
VARNISH LAYER: The natural-resin varnish layer is discoloured and a layer of surface dirt covers this. This is not the original varnish.
TREATMENT CARRIED OUT
A photographic record was taken and this was maintained throughout treatment.
Tests were carried out to remove the surface dirt safely and effectively. Cleaning proceeded with the appropriate reagent.
Following tests, including a safety margin-cleaning test, the appropriate solvent was identified and varnish removal proceeded using a swab stick.
Most of the over-paint was removed with the removal of the varnish removal.
Dirt was removed from between the canvas and the stretcher bar and the back of the canvas was cleaned.
An isolating conservation varnish was applied with a brush. Small localized losses were retouched and the areas where the over paint could not be removed. A final varnish was applied.
